MUMBAI – Syngene International Ltd. Wednesday reported a standalone net loss for the June quarter, as revenue declined sharply from the year-ago qaurter and the loss due to fluctuations in foregin exchanges jumped ten times from the year-on-year.

The company reported a standalone net loss of INR 21 million for the June quarter against a net profit of INR 740 million a year ago. Its revenue from operations fell 17% on year to INR 6.63 billion from INR 7.99 billion.  The company's total expenses for the June quarter were down 6.5% on year to INR 6.84 billion from INR 7.32 billion a year ago.

Employee benefits expense, the company's largest cost, declined slightly to INR 2.07 billion from INR 2.12 billion in the year-ago quarter, and accounted for 30% of the total expenses. The company's other expenses fell to INR 1.76 billion from INR 2.13 billion. Depreciation and amortisation expense increased slightly to INR 956 million from INR 946 million, while finance costs declined to INR 41 million from INR 59 million.

Syngene's profit before exceptional items and tax dived sharply to INR 35 million from INR 842 million a year ago.

The company's operating earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation declined 56% on year to INR 910 million in the June quarter from INR 2.06 billion a year ago. The company's operating EBITDA margin narrowed to 12% from 24% in the year-ago quarter. The company recognised an exceptional expense of INR 10 million related to employee termination benefits in the June quarter.

"Our performance during the quarter was primarily impacted by the lack of offtake from a major biologics client and forex hedge loss, partially offset by our ongoing cost optimization initiatives," Deepak Jain, chief financial officer, said. "Consequently, the operating EBITDA margin came in at 12%. While we expect a degrowth in the first half of the fiscal year, business momentum is expected to improve in the second half, resulting in single-digit revenue degrowth in rupee terms for the full year and EBITDA margins in the mid-20s," he said.

During the quarter, Syngene signed a memorandum of understanding with BRIC-Translational Health Science and Technology Institute to collaborate on clinical development, translational research, and bioanalytical sciences. The company also expanded its Syn.AI platform by adding gigascale virtual screening and AI-driven de novo drug design capabilities to accelerate drug discovery services.

Wednesday, shares of Syngene International Ltd. closed 1.25% higher at INR 414.25 apiece on the National Stock Exchange before the company detailed its earnings.  End
