Star Health Q1 PAT beats view on rise in insurance sales

MUMBAI – Star Health and Allied Insurance Co. Ltd. reported robust growth in its June quarter net profit due to a rise in insurance sales. However, a rise in the insurance service expenses limited the growth in the bottom line. 

 

The insurer posted a net profit of INR 5.50 billion for the June quarter, up nearly 26% on year. Analysts had estimated the company's net profit at INR 4.13 billion. The insurance sales for the June quarter rose over 13% on year to INR 49.2 billion. 

 

Insurance service expenses surged over 12% on year to INR 44.71 billion from INR 39.90 billion a year ago. Of this, the insurer's incurred claims rose over 12% on year to INR 33.19 billion. Employee benefit expenses grew nearly 22% on year to INR 3.04 billion. However, employee benefit expenses fell over 35% on a sequential basis. 

 

The gross written premium also supported the on-year growth in the insurer's net profit. It rose nearly 19% on year to INR 42.87 billion. However, it fell over 28% on a sequential basis. Fresh retail health gross written premium for the quarter stood at INR 7.3 billion, up 37% on year, the company said in a press release. The underwriting profit for the June quarter rose over six times to INR 1.11 billion from INR 160 million in the year-ago quarter. 

 

The insurer's expense ratio improved to 23.45% from 23.96% a quarter ago. Solvency ratio for the June quarter stood at 2.09%, up from 2.05% in the March quarter. The net insurance margin rose sharply to 20.95% for the June quarter from 5.52% a quarter ago. The combined operating ratio, which measures insurance service expenses as a percentage of insurance revenue, rose to 90.93% from 88.55% in the trailing quarter. The combined insurance service ratio improved to 97% from 98.7% in the year-ago quarter.

 

The combined ratio, a metric to evaluate the profitability of an insurance company, improved to 97.7% from 99.6% in the corresponding quarter a year ago. Loss ratio for the reporting quarter stood at 67.5% from 68.5% a year ago.

 

"Sustainable growth, driving improvement in core underwriting profitability, and sustained operating discipline have enabled us to deliver a strong start to the year," Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Anand Roy said on the company's performance.

 

On Wednesday, shares of the company ended 2.5% higher at INR 598.85 apiece on the National Stock Exchange. Star Health announced its financial results for the June quarter after market hours.  End
