NEW DELHI – Asian Paints Ltd. reported higher-than-expected earnings for the June quarter, driven by a recovery in demand in its India decorative paints business. The performance was also boosted by price hikes and margin expansion, resulting in a sharp rise in its net profit and revenue surpassing analysts' estimates. This was the second consecutive year-on-year increase in net profit growth, and revenue growth rose the most in the last four quarters.
The paint maker's consolidated net profit rose nearly 40% on year to INR 15.39 billion for the reporting quarter, surpassing the Street estimate of INR 12.61 billion. The company's consolidated revenue rose nearly 18% on year to INR 105.42 billion, above the Street estimate of INR 101.77 billion.
"We delivered strong profitability, supported by measured price increases, better mix, formulation and sourcing efficiencies and disciplined cost management. With volatility in raw material prices, we will stay agile and continue to focus on tech innovation and customer centricity to maintain our saliency in the market," the company said, quoting Amit Syngle, managing director and chief executive officer, in a press release.
The company's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation rose 33.5% to INR 21.69 billion, while EBITDA margin expanded to 20.6% from 18.2% a year ago.
Asian Paints' India decorative paints business reported a 9% volume growth, while value growth stood at 16.6%, supported by calibrated price hikes during the quarter. The international decorative paints business posted a 27.2% revenue growth in INR terms, while the overall international business grew 20.3% in constant currency terms.
"Our International business delivered healthy growth across key markets along with margin expansion, with the Middle East performing particularly well despite market challenges arising from the ongoing conflict in the region. Home Decor continued to make steady progress through our Beautiful Homes network, strengthening the Decor relationship with consumers," Syngle said.
The company's net sales from the international business were led by strong performance in Egypt, the UAE, Oman, Nepal, and Bangladesh.
The company's total expenses rose nearly 14% on year to INR 87.25 billion for the reporting quarter. Expenses related to cost of material consumed, which accounts for 62% of the total expenditure, rose over 36% on year to INR 54.49 billion. Other expenses rose 10% on year to INR 16.36 billion, and employee benefits expense rose over 12% on year to INR 7.90 billion. Expenses related to purchase of stock in trade rose over 19% on year to INR 10.95 billion. The company's total income rose over 18% on year to INR 107.83 billion and other income rose nearly 25% on year to INR 2.41 billion.
The industrial coatings business also delivered a steady growth. The Asian Paints PPG Pvt. Ltd. joint venture, which manufactures protective and powder coatings, reported a 21.3% rise in net sales to INR 3.73 billion, while profit before tax increased to INR 258 million from INR 248 million a year ago. PPG Asian Paints Pvt. Ltd., the automotive coatings joint venture, reported a 13.5% increase in net sales to INR 6.52 billion, with profit before tax rising to INR 1.03 billion from INR 973 million in the year-ago period.
"Industrial Coatings sustained mid-teen growth momentum complementing the performance of the decorative segment and driving broad-based growth across the coatings portfolio,' the company said in its press release.
Within the home decor business, the kitchen business reported a 10.1% increase in net sales to INR 1.08 billion, while its loss before tax narrowed sharply to INR 3 million from INR 88 million a year ago. However, the bath fittings business saw net sales declining 4.3% to INR 849 million, with its loss before tax widening to INR 88 million from INR 23 million a year ago. Sales of White Teak, the company's premium decorative lighting brand, declined 7.4%, while Weatherseal, which offers doors and windows solutions, posted an 11.2% growth in net sales.
The company announced its earnings during the market hours. AT 1522 IST, shares of the company traded at INR 2,758 on the National Stock Exchange, up 0.7%. End
