MUMBAI – An east-west shear zone runs across central India from the eastern to the western coasts of the country, the India Meteorological Department said. This weather system is likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall with spells of extremely heavy showers over Gujarat region on Thursday, for which the weather department has issued a red alert. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

 

A deep depression currently lies over the central parts of Chhattisgarh, and is likely to move nearly westwards across Chhattisgarh and east Madhya Pradesh in the next 24 hours. The movement of this weather system, combined with the shear zone, is expected to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Konkan and Goa on Thursday and Friday, over central Maharashtra till Friday, Marathwada till Thursday, Gujarat Region on Thursday and Saturday, and over Saurashtra and Kutch on Friday. Heavy showers with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected to persist over multiple parts of west India till Monday.

 

The presence of the deep depression, the monsoon trough, the east-west shear zone, and a western disturbance acting as a cyclonic circulation is expected to keep rainfall over central and northwest India normal-to-above-normal in the next three to four days, the weather bureau said.

 

In central India, heavy to very heavy rainfall with spells of extremely heavy showers are likely over parts of west Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, the weather bureau said. Very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of east Madhya Pradesh till Thursday, and over Vidarbha on Thursday. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are seen over multiple parts of central India till Tuesday.

 

Very heavy rainfall is expected to continue over parts of northwest India till Saturday, the bureau said. Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also likely over most parts of the region till Tuesday.

 

In east and northeast India, very heavy showers are expected over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday, over Arunachal Pradesh from Thursday to Sunday, and over Assam and Meghalaya on Thursday and Friday. Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is likely to persist over several parts of both regions till Tuesday.

 

Very heavy showers are forecast over parts of Kerala till Saturday, over Karnataka on Thursday and Friday, and over Telangana till Thursday, the weather department said. Strong surface winds are expected over parts of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Lakshadweep, and Karnataka till Sunday. Heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over most parts of south peninsular India till Tuesday, the department said.  End
