--P&G Hygiene: Apr-Jun net profit hit due to commodity cost fluctuations

By Eshitva Prakash

MUMBAI – Procter & Gamble Hygiene And Health Care Ltd. reported a sharp decline in its net profit for the June quarter as its revenue declined and expenses rose sharply. The company attributed its poor showing to fluctuations in commodity costs during the quarter.

The company reported an over 34% year-on-year decline in its net profit for the quarter to INR 1.26 billion. "Profit After Tax was... impacted by commodity cost fluctuations due to geopolitical uncertainties," the company said in a press release. The company said it continued to invest in innovation, which, along with increased advertising and promotional expenses will likely create long-term competitiveness and value creation.

For the June quarter, the company's revenue fell nearly 5% to INR 8.91 billion. Its other income for the quarter rose nearly 23% on year to INR 94.30 million. The company reported a 7.5% on-year increase in total expenses, largely driven by the high cost of raw and packing materials consumed.

The company's cost of raw and packing materials consumed increased 22% on year to INR 2 billion, comprising over 27% of the total expenses. The purchase of stock-in-trade of traded goods increased over 5% on year to INR 2.13 billion in the June quarter.

P&G reported a reduction in changes in inventories of finished goods, work-in-progress, and stock-in-trade at INR 332.2 million. The employee benefits expense increased 12% on year to INR 543.6 million, and advertising and sales promotion expenses increased 21% to INR 833 million.

Shares of P&G Hygiene fell sharply after the company declared its June quarter results during market hours. At 1346 IST, its shares were at INR 8,636 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, down nearly 4% from Tuesday.  End
