NEW DELHI – Social media group Cockroach Janta Party warned it would launch a massive protest again if the government failed to honour by Tuesday night its promise to withdraw police cases and take no further action against those who protested against the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test paper leak. Tuesday night was the deadline set during the group's talks with representatives of the government for withdrawal of all police cases against the protesters. The group's leaders now fear the government may selectively use parts of the Supreme Court's interim order on the agitators to pursue police cases against some.

"The Supreme Court's interim order... particularly Direction No. 4, which permits governments to proceed with existing FIRs (first information reports) and carry out investigations, raises extremely serious concerns," the group said in a statement Tuesday evening. It added that the direction is in "direct contradiction" to the assurance extended by the central government to the agitators on Saturday.

"We now have a credible apprehension that the Government of India and BJP-ruled states may seek to use and weaponise this order to continue FIRs against individual protesters and subject them to great harassment," the statement said. The party termed the court's order "uninformed" and "wholly unacceptable", because the government's lawyers failed to apprise it of the discussions with the group and the government's assurances to it. The discussions, it said, had "continued till late last night".

"We, therefore, demand that the central and the BJP state governments immediately place the terms of this solemn assurance before the Supreme Court in the pending proceedings, so that there is complete transparency... and so that the court can withdraw and make an informed order in the future," it said.

"A government that breaks its word cannot expect the youth to remain silent," the group said in its statement. "If the guarantees are dishonoured, the streets of India will once again become the voice of its young." 

The group's statement came amid reports of continued punitive police action against students in BJP-ruled states. Addressing a press conference at the Press Club of India here Tuesday, leaders of the All India Students' Association alleged that students protesting against alleged examination paper leaks were facing a crackdown nationwide. They said arrests, detention, and police action are underway in several states, more so in Bihar and Delhi. They alleged that students had been booked under false charges and subjected to arbitrary detention.

In a post on X, Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke warned that if the "harassment of students at the hands of the police" continues, the group will respond with a "massive peaceful protest soon". "The government must stop targeting and witch-hunting students," Dipke said. The nationwide youth protests, especially at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, resulted in Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation as Union education minister Saturday.  End
