MUMBAI – Cemindia Projects Ltd. Tuesday reported a 3% increase in net profit for the June quarter as a sharp fall in raw material costs limited the rise in total expenses to below the increase in revenues. Revenue growth was a modest 5.6% on year but expenses grew only 4.6% and this boosted the net profit.

The engineering, procurement, and construction company reported a consolidated net profit of INR 1.41 billion for the June quarter, up 3% on year from INR 1.37 billion. The reported net profit was lower than the INR 1.50 billion estimated by HDFC Securities Ltd., the lower of the two estimates available.

Cemindia's consolidated revenue from operations rose almost 6% on year to INR 27.21 billion from INR 25.76 billion in the year-ago quarter. Sequentially, the company's net profit fell 42% and revenue from operations fell more than 8%. The company's cost of construction materials consumed fell 6% to INR 8.46 billion from INR 8.98 billion in the year-ago quarter.

The company's total expenses were INR 25.38 billion, up almost 5% on year. Cemindia's subcontracting expenses and other direct costs rose 8% to INR 11.43 billion and was the largest expense for the company. Employee benefits expenses rose 19% to INR 2.41 billion. The company's other expenses were INR 2.15 billion, up 23% on a year-on-year basis.

"During the quarter, we secured record order inflows, taking our order book to an all-time high and providing strong multi-year revenue visibility," said Jayanta Basu, managing director of the company.

As of Jun. 30, the company's order book was at a record INR 313 billion. Major projects secured in the quarter include an underground metro project in Delhi, civil and structural works at a steel plant in West Bengal, and construction of Morsagar Artificial Reservoir and Feeder in Rajasthan.

The company secured new orders worth over INR 85 billion in the June quarter. Key projects executed by the company include the completion of the Ganga Expressway Project in Uttar Pradesh, construction of west container terminal in the port of Colombo, Sri Lanka, and erection of complex structures such as Quenching Towers in Gujarat.

Cemindia's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation rose to INR 2.85 billion from INR 2.61 billion for the quarter. The company's EBITDA margin expanded 40 basis points to 10.5% in the June quarter. Shares of the company recovered after the earnings were announced but still ended down 2% at INR 1,340.80 on the National Stock Exchange. End
