Detected INR-747.82-bln fake GST input tax credit claims in FY26, says govt

NEW DELHI – The government has detected fake input tax credit claims to the tune of INR 747.82 billion under goods and services tax in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), the finance ministry said Tuesday. During the year, 30,162 cases were detected, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in a written response to the Rajya Sabha.
In FY25, the total amount of fake input tax credit claims under GST was INR 587.73 billion with 15,283 cases, Chaudhary said. The government has been making efforts to weed out fake input tax credit claims, including biometric-based Aadhaar authentication of GST registration, the minister said.
According to Chaudhary, 1,517 fake GST registrations were obtained in FY26 using forged Aadhaar and PAN card details. The government detected GST evasion of INR 99.40 billion from this issue last year, involving just seven absconding masterminds. End
