Bharti Airtel continues to outpace RJio in June mobile user adds

MUMBAI – Domestic telecommunications operators net added 5.38 million mobile subscribers in June, higher than the 5.09 million users added in May, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Tuesday. Bharti Airtel Ltd. continued to outpace Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. in terms of mobile subscriber additions in June. Reliance Jio, however, retained the top spot, with over 39% market share in mobile subscriber base, the data showed. 

 

Bharti Airtel net added 2.99 million mobile users in June, taking its subscriber base to 486.80 million. In May, the company had added 2.9 million users. Reliance Jio net added 2.15 million mobile users in June, bringing its subscriber base to 503.58 million. In May also, the company had 2.15 million mobile users. Vodafone Idea added 163,757 mobile subscribers in June, taking its subscriber count to 198.82 million. This was higher than the 121,289 subscribers it added in May. 

 

State-owned BSNL net added 94,006 mobile users in June, compared to the 104,660 subscribers it lost in May. MTNL lost 11,284 mobile users in June, way higher than the 3,803 users it lost in May. With this, BSNL has a mobile subscriber count of 93.01 million and MTNL has 166,477.

 

Overall mobile subscriber base in India increased to 1.28 billion users in June, up 0.4% from May. Mobile subscription in urban areas increased 0.7% on month to 739.43 million users in June and those in rural areas increased 0.1% on month to 542.95 million users. As of Jun. 30, private sector companies held 92.73% of the market share in mobile subscribers and public sector players, BSNL and MTNL together held 7.27%. Reliance Jio leads the market with a share of 39.27%, followed by Bharti Airtel at 37.96%. Vodafone Idea holds a 15.50% share, while BSNL and MTNL hold 7.25% and 0.01%, respectively.
