India Monday rainfall 50% below normal, season's deficit at 16%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 4.8 millimetres of rainfall on Monday, 50% below the normal of 9.7 mm, according to the data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Jul. 27, the country received 342.5 mm of rain, 16% below the normal of 408.9 mm for the period.
Of the four homogeneous regions of the country, two regions – east and northeast India and northwest India – registered "large deficient" rains on Monday, while central India and south India received "deficient" rains.
The east and northeast region received 69% below-normal rains at 4 mm of rainfall and central India recorded 8 mm of rainfall, 30% below the normal rains on Monday. South India received 31% below-normal rains at 4.5 mm, and northwest India recorded 1.9 mm of rainfall, 76% below the normal.
On Monday, Konkan & Goa received the highest rainfall at 32.8 mm, followed by Odisha at 20.8 mm, according to IMD data. The department has issued a red alert for Odisha as extremely heavy rainfall has been forecast for Tuesday.
Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large excess" in one, "excess" in five, "large deficient" in 19, "deficient" in eight, and "normal" in three, according to the data. End
