NEW DELHI – Social media group Cockroach Janta Party Monday announced the setting up of a fund to provide legal aid to exam paper leak protesters against whom police cases are being filed in various states. Senior Advocate and Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal pledged INR 10 million for the corpus, apart from providing legal consultation to the Cockroach Party team. Sibal also urged other people to contribute to the fund.

 

Addressing a joint press conference with spokespersons of the group, the Rajya Sabha member said lawyers across the country, especially in rural areas, who want to take up such cases either pro bono or for an honorarium, can contact the Cockroach Janta Party.

 

The group's chief spokesperson, Saurav Das, said they will launch a website where lawyers who want to stand up for students can give their details. "The data will be maintained district-wise, so that legal help can reach each and every needy person," Das said.

 

The social media group's legal contact person Ratna said a legal team is most needed in Bihar from where reports of a severe police crackdown in Patna, Siwan, and Chhapra districts are coming. "The copy of an FIR (first information report) we got has 144 named accused and around 5,000 unknown persons. The police have already arrested 86 persons. So, we urge the local students' unions and lawyers to help identify such cases and ensure legal help for them," she said.

 

Spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said that in their talks with Union ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh, the group had asked for copies of all FIRs lodged against protesters in Delhi and other places. "We are yet to get these. Besides, the government had also promised to give us in writing by Tuesday that they would not take any coercive action against the agitators. We are also waiting for that," he said.

 

Das said Cockroach Janta Party will also take legal action against police personnel who molested, harassed, or thrashed women and used excessive force against peaceful protesters. "We have dedicated a section on our website for the same. If you have video evidence, upload it there, and our legal team will look into it," he said.

 

Sibal cautioned the youth to not fall for the Bharatiya Janata Party's "communally divisive narrative" and to unitedly fight this battle, "which is for the reform of India".  End
