MUMBAI – The benchmark equity indices started the week on a positive note, ending higher Monday after closing in the red for five sessions in a row. The sentiment in the market improved after Brent crude oil fell below $90 a barrel. The sentiment was supported by the June quarter earnings, which have been more or less in line with expectations. Analysts are also hopeful that foreign investors will look at Indian stocks with greater enthusiasm now, given the concerns about the artificial intelligence-led rally elsewhere in Asia.
Monday, the Nifty 50 index ended at 23995.95 points, up 228.50 points or 1%. The index went past the psyschologically-crucial 24000 points but ended a shade below the level. The 50-stock index had fallen below 24000 points after US President Donald Trump said he would impose steep tariffs on generic drugs imported to the US starting August 2028 if the companies failed to bring manufacturing to the US by then. Broader market indices also rebounded sharply and ended 1.1-1.3% higher. The market's fear gauge plunged over 9% to end at 12.660 points. Only six Nifty 50 stocks ended lower, a sharp contrast from Friday, when 33 stocks fell.
"If the de-escalation of the West Asia conflict holds and crude price drifts lower, that can sustain a mild rally in the market," V.K. Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments, said. "The correction in chip stocks and concerns surrounding the AI trade have the potential to revive enthusiasm of FPIs (foreign portfolio investors) in Indian stocks. The diversity of stocks available in the Indian market is rare among emerging markets. At some point the FPIs will be forced to recognise this and move away from markets dominated by a single stock or two stocks as in Taiwan and South Korea."
Large-cap stocks such as Eternal, InterGlobe Aviation, Infosys, and Bajaj Finance saw substantial buying interest in Monday's session. Eternal hit an intraday high of INR 297 and closed around 6% higher at INR 295.85. The other three stocks mentioned likely attracted value-buying after falling sharply after announcing their earnings and closing lower since Wednesday. Among Nifty 50 stocks, Titan Co. and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries hit all-time highs earlier in the day and ended 1-2% higher.
Tata Consumer Products ended nearly 2% higher at INR 1,107.40 after its June quarter results which largely met the Street's view. The company's underlying volume growth came in at 13% on year. Some analysts had said fast-moving consumer goods companies would see strong growth in volumes in the coming months. Several brokerages see the comany's long-term growth intact but some see its tea segment being susceptible to competitive pricing dynamics and input costs. Most broking firms retained their "buy" or "add" recommendations on the stock and raised their respective target prices by 2%. Elara Capital, however, cut its target price by 4% while retaining the "accumulate" recommendation.
Shriram Finance ended in the green and was among the six stocks in the Nifty 50 to close more than 3% higher. The stock closed at INR 1,038.20, up 3.3%. Several brokerages raised their earnings estimates for the company for the financial year 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) as they see MUFG's capital infusion in the company and lower credit costs boosting its net interest margin. For Apr-Jun, the non-banking financial services player reported a 60% year-on-year jump in net profit to INR 34.45 billion, driven by robust growth in its assets under management.
Among stocks that fell in the Nifty 50, Oil and Natural Gas Corp. ended over 4% lower. Its peer Oil India ended 2% lower. This was after crude oil prices eased substantially on Monday after US and Iran stopped launching fresh attacks on each other over the weekend. Oil marketers such as Hindustan Petroleum Corp., Bharat Petroleum Corp., and Indian Oil Corp. ended over 2-3% higher.
Meanwhile, Laurus Labs ended 7% higher at its record closing high of INR 1,713.40. The stock hit an all-time high of 1,734.50 points after higher-than-expected earnings. The management's confidence in expanding its contract development and manufacturing business led the rally in the stock. The company expects its capital expenditure for FY27 to be INR 20 billion, driving its small molecules contract development and manufacturing and active pharmaceutical ingredient operations.
