MUMBAI – Sumitomo Chemical India Ltd. reported a sharp on-year rise in its net profit for the June quarter due to inclusion of an exceptional item in the bottom line figure. The consolidated figures for the quarter beat the consensus estimates for both top line and bottom line. A slight on-year decline in expenses also helped the bottom line.

The company reported a consolidated net profit of INR 2.15 billion for the June quarter, up over 20% on year and 93% on quarter. Analysts had estimated the net profit between INR 1.37 billion and INR 1.60 billion. The company posted consolidated revenue from operations of INR 10.63 billion, up marginally on year and over 55% sequentially. The revenue was also above the Street's expectations of INR 9.70 billion-INR 10.04 billion for the reporting quarter.

An exceptional income of INR 268.96 million added to the net profit, as the group received it as an insurance claim for business interruption due to a fire at the Bhavnagar plant during financial year 2022-23 (Apr-Mar).

The company reported total expenses of INR 8.50 billion in the June quarter, down marginally from INR 8.55 billion in the year-ago quarter. At 1335 IST, shares of Sumitomo Chmeical were at INR 530.05 per share on the National Stock Exchange, up 1.8% after the earnings were announced.

Even without the one-time exceptional income of INR 268.96 million, the company would still have reported a net profit of INR 1.88 billion for the June quarter.

Sumitomo's total income rose to INR 11.11 billion for the reporting quarter, up more than 1% on year and over 55% sequentially. The company's other income was INR 472.84 million for the quarter, up 22% on year and 47% on quarter.

The company's total expenses rose over 49% sequentially. It declined on year due to a negative INR 399.71 million of change in its inventories of finished goods, work-in-progress and stock-in-trade. The company's cost of materials consumed in the June quarter rose 25% on year and 32% on quarter to INR 5.54 billion, contributing 65% to its total expenses.

The consolidated figures include the results of the parent co. Sumitomo Chemical India Ltd. and its two subsidiaries, Barrix Agro Sciences Pvt. Ltd. and Excel Crop Care (Africa) Ltd., as per the earnings release by the company. The arm Excel Crop is currently under liquidation.

On a standalone basis, Sumitomo reported a net profit of INR 2.17 billion for the June quarter, up more than 20% on year and nearly 96% sequentially. Its revenue from operations was INR 10.54 billion, up marginally on year.

Sumitomo Chemical has not reported its segmental results as there was only the agrochemical segment to report, it said in its earnings. End
