--Govt tables bill in Lok Sabha to address malpractices in conduct of exams

--Lok Sabha adjourned till 1400 IST amid opposition protests

NEW DELHI – Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Monday asked the government and the Opposition to sort out their differences on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, "in three hours" so that a debate on it can be initiated. Earlier, Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh tabled the Bill in the Lok Sabha amid ruckus by members of the Opposition.

After an earlier adjournment, which came soon after the Bill to address malpractices in the conduct of public examinations was tabled in the midst of an opposition protest at 1200 IST, the House reassembled at 1400 IST. The speaker sought to initiate a debate on the Bill, but opposition members started raising slogans, demanding answers from the government over the police action and use of pellet guns on young protesters in Delhi on Jul. 20.

"I am ready to give more than six hours to debate and discuss this Bill," Birla said. "Let's initiate a discussion." As opposition members continued to protest, Birla said, "I am giving three hours to both sides to sit down and sort out their differences on this." The House was then adjourned till 1700 IST.  End
