MUMBAI – The depression over northwest Bay of Bengal strengthened into a deep depression in the early hours of Monday, the India Meteorological Department said. It is likely to move north-northwestwards and cross the West Bengal-Odisha coast during the latter half of the day, the weather department said. A trough runs from a cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan to a cyclonic circulation associated with this deep depression. This trough is expected to lead to very heavy rainfall over parts of central India till Thursday and western India till Sunday, the department said.

 

The formation and strengthening of the weather system over the Bay of Bengal has lead to a revival of monsoon conditions across many parts of the country, particularly over west and central India. The weather system has triggered other systems over the country, causing intense spells of showers.

 

The presence of the trough, along with the deep depression, is expected to cause very heavy showers over parts of Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday and Thursday, over Vidarbha on Tuesday and Wednesday, and over Chhattisgarh till Tuesday, the weather bureau said. Heavy showers are seen over most parts of central India till Sunday, while thunderstorms and lightning are likely over some parts till Friday, the bureau said.

 

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over the eastcentral Arabian Sea and the adjoining Konkan coast. This system, along with the other cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and the trough, is expected to trigger very heavy showers over parts of central Maharashtra till Tuesday and on Thursday and Friday, and over Gujarat region from Thursday to Sunday, the bureau said. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected over several parts of west India till Sunday.

 

The deep depression is also expected to cause very heavy rainfall over Odisha on Tuesday, Arunachal Pradesh from Wednesday to Sunday, and Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till Sunday, the weather department said. Heavy showers with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over multiple parts of east India till Sunday and over parts of northeast India till Friday, the department said.

 

The interaction of the deep depression with the monsoon trough, which currently lies south of its normal position, along with the cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and another one over Uttar Pradesh is likely to cause widespread rainfall activity over northwest India. Very heavy showers are expected over many parts of the region till Friday, the department said. Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over most parts of the region till Sunday.

 

Though no active weather system lies over south peninsular India currently, the proximity of other systems north to the region is expected to lead to rainfall activity. Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Karnataka till Thursday, the weather bureau said. Heavy showers with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are seen over most parts of south peninsula India till Sunday, the bureau said.

 

Hot and humid weather conditions are likely over parts of Andhra Pradesh till Tuesday, the bureau said.  End
