India rainfall on Sunday 35% below normal, season's deficit at 15%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 6.2 millimetres of rainfall on Sunday, 35% below the normal of 9.5 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1-Jul. 26, the country received 337.7 millimetres of precipitation, 15% below the normal for the period.
Rainfall in all four homogenous regions in the country was below normal on Sunday, the data showed. In northwest India, rainfall was 10% below normal at 6.8 millimetres. Among all subdivisions in the region, only Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh and west Rajasthan recorded "large excess" and "excess" showers. Rainfall was below normal in all other seven subdivisions in the region.
In central India, rainfall was 15% below normal at 9.4 millimetres, according to the data. According to the weather department's daily forecast released Sunday, a well-marked low pressure area intensified into a depression over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Odisha-West Bengal coasts. The presence of this weather system caused "large excess" rainfall over Odisha on Sunday. The depression is likely to strengthen into a deep depression, and as such the spell of intense showers over Odisha is likely to continue on Monday. Another low pressure area lies over southwest Rajasthan, which also caused "large excess" showers over Gujarat on Sunday.
Rainfall in south peninsula India was 64% below normal at 2.5 millimetres on Sunday, the data showed. Only coastal Karnataka recorded slightly above normal showers, while all other nine regions saw deficient rainfall. East and northeast India received 80% below normal rainfall at 2.6 millimetres.
In the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 23, "normal" in five, "large excess" in four, and "deficient" in three, according to the data. One subdivision, Lakshadweep, did not record any rainfall on Sunday. End
