MUMBAI – Under the influence of a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining West Bengal coast, Odisha is forecast to receive "extremely heavy" rainfall during the weekend, which is seen subsiding to "very heavy" rainfall till Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department said. The department has issued a red alert for the eastern state on the weekend. 

 

Amid the occurrence of a low-pressure area over southwest Rajasthan, Gujarat is expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall on Saturday. Ghats or mountain ranges of central Maharashtra are also expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall during the weekend, for which the weather bureau has issued a red alert. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

 

Other western India regions such as Konkan and Goa are likely to receive "very heavy" rainfall during the weekend. Similar conditions are likely in Saurashtra and Kutch Sunday, in central Maharashtra Monday, and the Gujarat region Sunday and next week till Friday, the department said.

 

In northwest India, very heavy rainfall is expected over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab Tuesday and Wednesday. While east Uttar Pradesh is seen receiving very heavy rainfall Monday and Tuesday, similar rain activity is seen over western Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh from Tuesday to Thursday.

 

In central India, very heavy rainfall is likely over Chhattisgarh Sunday and Monday. In northeast India, similar rainfall is expected over Assam and Meghalaya on the last two days of July.

 

The weather bureau said South India is likely to continue seeing subdued rainfall activity in the coming days. However, strong surface winds are expected over coastal Andhra Pradesh, coastal Karnataka, and parts of Telangana till Wednesday, it said.  End
