MUMBAI – The Nifty Bank index is expected to perform better next week and is expected to outpace the broader market, on the back of robut earnings from most banks in the index, analysts said. The market is expected to remain under stress due to the on going war in West Asia in the coming week as well, they said. "Indian equities are expected to remain under pressure as escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia keep Brent crude oil prices elevated, weighing on the rupee and investor sentiment," Siddharth Khemka, Head of Research of Wealth Management at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, said in a note.

Nifty Bank constituents that have reported June-quarter earnings so far have largely delivered a healthy set of numbers, with most lenders posting steady loan growth, resilient asset quality and a stable-to-improving profitability despite pressure on net interest margins from repo rate cuts. HDFC Bank signalled it was ready to accelerate loan growth while focusing on liquidity augmentation through RBI's foreign currency schemes, ICICI Bank reported another strong quarter backed by healthy credit costs and stable asset quality, Axis Bank maintained steady business momentum despite margin pressure, while Kotak Mahindra Bank continued to focus on granular deposit mobilisation and improving loan growth.

Earnings over the weekend will also dictate direction next week for key contituents of the index. "Key earnings over the weekend from IDFC First Bank, and AU Small Finance Bank will also remain in focus," Khemka said.

Friday, the Nifty Bank settled at 56693.50 points, down 3.1% on week. Shares of Punjab National Bank rose 4.4% on week, leading the index, while HDFC Bank was down 9.4% on week.

In its technical view, Bajaj Broking said, "Bank Nifty formed a bullish piercing line candle as buying demand emerged around the 52 weeks EMA from the extreme oversold territory. Bank Nifty in the last 6 weeks is seen consolidating in the range of 56500-58700. Index breached the lower band of the range on Friday's session to form an intraday low of 56023, it however recovered during the session to close above 56,500 levels."
