MUMBAI – Shares of fast-moving consumer goods companies are expected to remain rangebound but will react to the June quarter earnings next week. Market participants will watch out for management commentary from the post-earnings analyst conference call. Outlook on raw material prices and volume growth will determine the stock movement in the near term, according to analysts.
This week, the Nifty FMCG moved in a tight range between 49400 and 48600 points. Nifty FMCG index is showing signs of consolidation in the short term in 48000-50000 range, Vipin Kumar, technical and derivatives analyst at Globe Capital Market, said. Friday, the Nifty FMCG index closed flat at 49053.30 points. For the week, the sectoral index closed 0.6% higher, outperforming the benchmark Nifty 50 that closed 2.3% lower.
FMCG giant Tata Consumer Products reported a strong growth for the June quarter on the back of higher sales in India and price hikes during the quarter. The major tea retailer's net profit grew nearly 28% on year to INR 4.27 billion while its revenue rose nearly 12% to INR 54 billion for the June quarter. The healthy growth was on the back of a 13% on-year rise in the company's total sales volume.
Tata Consumer Products management in its post-earnings analyst conference call said it may raise prices further across its product categories if it was faced with increase in commodity costs to maintain its margins. The company had also hiked prices of its products in June.
Next week will be heavy on the earnings front for FMCG companies, with two Nifty 50 giants, Hindustan Unilever and ITC, slated to declare their Apr-Jun results. Among other FMCG companies, Colgate Palmolive India, Procter Gamble Hygiene & Health Care, Dabur India, Gillette India, AWL Agri Business, Varun Beverages, and Radico Khaitan will also detail their June quarter earnings next week.
Six of the 15 constituents of Nifty FMCG closed in the red, down 0.2-2.0%. Over the week, United Spirits gained nearly 7% and was the top gainer in the Nifty FMCG index, while Varun Beverages fell almost 7%, being the worst hit. Despite seven constituents posting losses over the week, the FMCG index managed to rise 0.6%.
