MUMBAI – Bank of India Friday reported a sharp rise in its net profit for the June quarter on the back of a healthy rise in both interest and non-interest income even as its net interest margin contracted.

 

The lender's net profit for the June quarter was INR 30.68 billion, up over 36% on year from INR 22.52 billion. Sequentially, the bottom line rose 1.7%. Systematix Shares and Stocks (India) Ltd. had estimated the lender's net profit at INR 6.31 billion. The public-sector bank's operating profit rose 26% on year to INR 50.5 billion from INR 40.1 billion.

 

Bank of India's net interest income rose 13% on year to INR 68.33 billion. The bank's non-interest income increased 19% to INR 25.79 billion.

 

The lender's global net interest margin for the June quarter declined to 2.52% from 2.58% a quarter ago and 2.55% in the year-ago quarter. The bank's global deposits rose 15% on year to INR 9.58 trillion as of Jun. 30. Its global advances increased 19% to INR 7.98 trillion.

 

ASSET QUALITY

Bank of India's gross non-performing asset ratio improved to 1.81% in the June quarter from 1.98% in the March quarter. Its net non-performing asset ratio improved 4 basis points on quarter to 0.51%. The slippage ratio improved 9 bps on year to 0.24%. Its capital adequacy ratio for Basel-III was 18.69% in the June quarter compared to 18.01% in the trailing quarter. Its provision coverage ratio was 93.83% compared to 92.94% in the year-ago quarter.

 

The bank's overseas deposits rose 8% on year to INR 1.33 trillion and domestic deposits rose 16% to INR 8.25 trillion. The public-sector lender's domestic advances rose 19% to INR 6.74 trillion and overseas advances increased 16% to INR 1.24 trillion.

 

The bank's ratio of capital to risk-weighted assets increased to 18.69% in the June quarter from 17.39% in the year-ago quarter. Its return on equity increased 257 basis points on year to 16.12%. The bank reported cash recoveries of INR 12.77 billion in the June quarter, down 28% on year.

 

Segment-wise, Bank of India's revenues from retail banking operations were INR 86.16 billion, revenues from wholesale banking operations were INR 79.20 billion, and revenues from treasury operations were INR 57.69 billion.

 

Friday, shares of the bank closed at INR 142.62 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, up marginally from Thursday. The bank announced its results after market hours.  End
