NEW DELHI – India's foreign exchange reserves rose to a six-week high of $676.24 billion as of Jul. 17, data released by the Reserve Bank of India Friday showed. The reserves rose by 1.08 billion on week for the third consecutive week, owing to an increase in foreign currency assets. However, the rise in foreign exchange reserves as of Jul. 17 was partly offset by a fall in the value of gold reserves held by the central bank.

The rupee depreciated 1% against the dollar in the week ended Jul. 17 as crude oil prices rose amid renewed geopolitical tension in West Asia, according to dealers. Foreign currency assets jumped $4.55 billion from a week ago to $551.06 billion as of Jul. 17, while the value of the central bank's gold holdings fell by $3.48 billion on week to $101.75 billion.

Calculated in dollar terms, the RBI's foreign exchange reserves also reflect the impact of the appreciation or depreciation of currencies other than the dollar, such as the euro, the pound sterling, and the yen held by the central bank.  End
