MUMBAI – Speciality chemicals manufacturer Atul Ltd. reported a sharp rise in consolidated net profit for the June quarter on the back of a healthy increase in net revenues while expenses rose moderately. The bottom line also beat the Street's view.
The company reported a consolidated net profit of INR 2.45 billion for the June quarter, up 91% on year from INR 1.28 billion. Analysts had estimated the net profit at INR 1.66 billion. Atul Ltd.'s revenue from operations rose 25% on year to INR 18.48 billion, far higher than the estimate of INR 16.75 billion. The company had posted revenues of INR 14.78 billion for the year-ago quarter.
The company's board approved capital expenditure of INR 1.67 billion for a new manufacturing facility for two herbicide chemicals. The proposed capacity is 1,000 tonnes per annum for the Mecoprop-p plant and 750 tonnes per annum for the 2-methyl 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid plant.
Total expenses for the June quarter increased 16% on year to INR 15.37 billion from INR 13.29 billion. The company's cost of materials consumed was the largest expense on the books and rose 40% on year to INR 11.03 billion. The employee benefit expenses of the company increased to INR 1.32 billion from INR 1.20 billion. The company's other expenses increased 6% to INR 1.92 billion. The company's total tax expenses more than doubled to INR 929 million from INR 446.7 million.
Atul reported revenues of INR 4.7 billion from the life science chemicals segment and INR 14.27 billion from the performance and other chemicals segment, with a profit of INR 928 million and INR 2.40 billion from these segments, respectively.
The results were announced during market hours. Friday, the company's shares closed at INR 6,407.5 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, up 4.5% from Thursday. End
