MUMBAI – Benchmark equity indices fell for the fifth straight session on Friday, ending the week down over 2%. The indices came under selling pressure after crude oil prices surged to over $100 a barrel as hostilities between the US and Iran escalated following the collapse of the interim peace deal. Moreover, Yemen's Houthis launched attacks on shipments passing through the Red Sea, raising risks of further disruptions in energy supply chains.

On Friday, the 50-stock index settled at 23767.45 points, down 102.15 points or 0.4%. The index fell as low as 23606.30 points during the day, coming close to the crucial support level of 23600 points. A breach of this level could have dragged the index down to 23500 points, technical analysts said. The BSE Sensex closed at 76141.27 points, down 250.12 points or 0.3%. Broader market indices staged a significant recovery in the second half of the trading session. They had fallen 1% during the day but came off lows to close slightly higher.

In the first hour of the session, most Nifty 50 stocks came under selling pressure and traded in the red. The benchmark indices fell 1% intraday, with fewer than 10 Nifty 50 stocks trading in positive territory for good part of the session. Traders bought shares of information technology companies such as HCL Technologies, Wipro, and Tata Consultancy Services, while they offloaded Infosys. They also bought shares of mid-cap IT companies such as Persistent Systems, LTM, and Coforge.

Buying in domestic technology stocks came on Friday amid a global sell-off of artificial intelligence and technology stocks after Alphabet raised its capital expenditure guidance, stoking investor concerns about heavy spending. The unexpected guidance triggered a sell-off in shares of chipmakers and technology companies across Asia. The absence of a strong artificial intelligence theme in India shielded the benchmark indices from the sharp declines seen in their global peers.

Among Nifty 50 constituents, Bajaj Finance closed 2.6% lower and was the worst-hit Nifty 50 stock. Shriram Finance also closed in the red, with 2% losses. Though Shriram Finance saw a brief recovery after it declared better-than-expected earnings, it fell again to end in the red. The company reported a net profit of INR 34.45 billion, sharply higher than the forecast of INR 30.52 billion.

Traders sold shares of online food delivery companies such as Eternal and Swiggy after reports said that Walmart-led Flipkart was preparing to enter the online food delivery market between August and September. Shares of the two companies ended 2.5-4% lower. At present, the two listed players dominate the space. This also comes amid quick-commerce major Zepto filing draft papers in early July for an initial public offering.

Meanwhile, Infosys ended around 1% lower after the company disappointed the Street with weak results. Brokerages raised alarm on the growth trajectory for Infosys in 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) following the lower-than-expected results and the company cutting its revenue guidance for FY27 in constant currency terms to 1.5-3.0% from 1.5-3.5%. Nuvama Institutional Equities cut its target price on Infosys by over 24%, while Nirmal Bang cut it by 8%.
