MUMBAI – Sapphire Foods India Ltd. reported a higher-than-estimated net profit for the June quarter on the back of a strong rise in sales and as revenues grew faster than expenses.

The company reported a consolidated net profit of INR 140.41 million for the June quarter, beating the Street's estimate of INR 48 million. In the year-ago quarter, the company had reported a loss of INR 17.98 million. The company reported revenues of INR 8.91 billion for the June quarter, up nearly 15% on year from INR 7.77 billion. The company's revenues are also marginally higher than the Street's estimate of INR 8.77 billion.

Total expenses rose 12% on year to INR 8.8 billion. The company's biggest expense head was other expenses, which were INR 3.6 billion, up 16% from the year-ago quarter. The second-biggest expense was raw material costs, which were INR 2.8 billion, up nearly 10%. This rise in expenses limited the company's bottom line growth.

Sapphire Food's adjusted EBITDA for the June quarter was up 37% on year at INR 749 million and its EBITDA margin expanded 130 basis points to 8.4%. The KFC business reported an EBITDA margin of 16.9%, up 120 bps on year, while its Pizza Hut business reported an EBITDA margin of 3.6%, down 110 bps. KFC's same-store sales growth was 5% in the June quarter, while Pizza Hut's same-store sales growth was up 1%. This was in line with the Street's estimates.

The company added 22 restaurants, across brands, in the June quarter, compared to 11 new restaurants in the year-ago quarter. The company said high fuel costs hit Pizza Hut's operations hard in the quarter. Sapphire Food's consolidated gross margin was 69%, up 140 basis points from last year.

KFC's revenue from restaurant sales grew 17% on year to INR 6.2 billion, with an average daily sales per store of INR 118,000, up 5% on year. Most of the sales were powered by its home deliveries, making up 41% of sales, while 37% of sales were from dine-in, and 22% were from takeaways. According to the company, KFC's sales grew after it introduced two high-value promotions--INR 99 Krisper Chicken Burger Meal and Hot & Crispy BOGO on select days. Sapphire opened 16 new KFC stores in the quarter.

However, despite taking similar measures for the Pizza Hut India business, the pizza chain reported restaurant sales of INR 1.4 billion, up 3%, in the June quarter. Its average daily sales per store were flat on year at INR 44,000. Half of Pizza Hut's sales came from deliveries, while dine-in accounted for 33% and takeaways 17%. In Sri Lanka, Pizza Hut reported average daily sales per store of INR 112,000, up 9%. Restaurant sales from Pizza Hut Sri Lanka were INR 1.35 billion, up 16%. Five new Pizza Hut stores were opened across India and one new store was opened in Sri Lanka in the June quarter.

At 1452 IST, shares of Sapphire Foods India Ltd. were at INR 178.99 per share on the National Stock Exchange, down 0.6% from Thursday, after the earnings were announced.  End
