MUMBAI – Under the influence of a low pressure area over southeast Rajasthan, exceptionally heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Gujarat, for which the India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert. Very heavy rainfall is also expected to persist over parts of Gujarat on Sunday and Monday, the weather department said. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

In a notification late on Thursday, the weather department noted that the Valsad district in Gujarat recorded 1,064 millimetres of rainfall between 0830 IST Wednesday and 0830 IST Thursday. This is the third-highest rainfall ever recorded in the country, after Sohra in Meghalaya, recording 1,563.3 millimetres on Jun. 16, 1995, and Aminidivi in Lakshadweep receiving 1,168.5 millimetres on May 6, 2004. The combination of the low pressure area, the monsoon trough, and a western disturbance caused the exceptionally heavy showers in Valsad, the weather department said.

In west India, very heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Konkan and Goa till Saturday and over central Maharashtra on Saturday and Sunday, the weather bureau said. Heavy showers are likely to persist over most parts of west India till Thursday, the bureau said.

A trough runs from the low pressure area over southeast Rajasthan to Jammu, the weather department said. The presence of this system, along with the monsoon trough and the western disturbance acting as a trough, is likely to lead to very heavy rainfall over most parts of northwest India till Thursday, the department said. Heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also likely over several parts of northwest India till Thursday.

Two upper air cyclonic circulations lie over east and northeast India, which are likely to cause very heavy showers over parts of Gangetic West Bengal on Sunday and over Odisha till Tuesday, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are seen over multiple parts of east India till Thursday, while heavy showers are likely to continue over parts of northeast India till Tuesday, the bureau said.

In central India, heavy showers are expected over parts of west Madhya Pradesh from Tuesday to Thursday, over Chhattisgarh and east Madhya Pradesh from Sunday to Thursday, and over Vidarbha on Tuesday and Wednesday, the weather department said. A wet spell with thunderstorms and lightning is likely over most parts of central India till Wednesday, the department said.

Strong surface winds are expected over parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till Sunday and over parts of Andhra Pradesh till Tuesday, the weather bureau said. Heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over most parts of south peninsular India till Thursday, the bureau said.  End
