MUMBAI – V-Mart Retail Ltd. reported a sharp sequential rise in its net profit for the June quarter and beat the Street's estimate. The net profit for the quarter rose fourfold sequentially and by two-fifths compared to the year-ago quarter. The company's total expenses rose, but at the same pace as its total income on a year-on-year basis.

 

The company's net profit for the reporting quarter was up 318% sequentially at INR 472.1 million. This represents a 40% on-year rise in the company's net profit. Analysts had estimated the company's net profit for the quarter at INR 436.80 million.

 

The company's revenue from operations was up nearly 23% on year at INR 10.89 billion, an over 12% sequential rise. The company had earlier informed exchanges about the revenue for the quarter in a provisional business update.

 

The company's revenue from its retail trade segment was up 23% on year at INR 10.83 billion. Digital marketplace sales by the company accounted for only around 1% of the company's revenue. Sales from the segment grew 28% on year to INR 103.7 million.  

 

The company's purchase of stock-in-trade, employee benefit expenses, and other expenses represented 81% of the company's total expenses for the June quarter at INR 10.32 billion. The company's total expenses were up 22% on year.

 

The company's purchase of stock-in-trade was at INR 6.2 billion, up over 53% on year. Notably, the company's changes in inventories of stock-in-trade were down 44% on year at INR 936 million. Its employee benefit expenses were up 17% on year at INR 1.11 billion. Other expenses were up over 13% on year at INR 1.03 billion. 

 

V-Mart Retail's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amostisation for the June quarter was INR 1.61 billion, as compared to INR 1.26 billion a year ago. The company's EBITDA margin was 14.8%, compared to 14.3% in the year-ago quarter. The company reported same-store-sales growth of 9%. It net addded 14 stores during the June quarter, taking its store count to 591.

 

At 1418, shares of V-Mart Retail were at INR 741 on the National Stock Exchange, down 2.5% from Thursday.  End
