NEW DELHI – The Supreme Court Friday sought the Centre's response on what it was doing to shift the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for medical entrance to computer-based testing, observing that the government should put an end to the "series of errors" surrounding the examination. "Please tell us what you (the Centre) are doing to shift completely to an online mode. Please tell us how you will protect data when we shift to computer-based testing," the apex court said. 

 

It asked the Centre to file a detailed affidavit on proposals for preventing future paper leaks. The apex court said it would closely monitor the issue after the affidavit was filed by the Centre. "We will follow it up throughout the year. We will see that complete and total institutionalisation takes place," said a bench of Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe.

 

Appearing for the Centre, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta said the government was going 10 extra miles to address the issues for children. "We will explain right from the printing press till the time the student gets the paper, what is the process in place," said Mehta. Everything was being done under the supervision of the highest executive level, he said, seeking some more time to place before the court a "holistic view". "We cannot let this go on like this," the top court said.

 

It will hear the case next on Aug 3.

 

The apex court was hearing petitions seeking a slew of reforms in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for medical entrance after the cancellation of this year's examination over allegations of question paper leak. The apex court had earlier said it was sad that authorities had not learnt their lesson even after a committee was formed to reform the examination process.  

 

This comes amid ongoing protest in the national capital, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Pradhan over irregularities in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Examination. A series of violent clashes have taken place between protestors and police personnel on the streets of Delhi after Cockroach Janta Party on Monday began the 'Chalo Sansad' march to Parliament.  End
