MUMBAI – The Office of US Trades Representative has imposed tariffs on 60 economies for failing to effectively prohibit the import of goods produced with forced labour. This follows investigations by the office, which included two rounds of public hearings in early July and analysis of over 1,600 written comments on proposed responsive actions.

"(US) President (Donald) Trump recognizes that decades of moral suasion have not eradicated forced labor from global supply chains," Ambassador Jamieson Greer said in a press release by the Office of US Trade Representative. "Today's action will begin to correct what is both a human rights abuse and distortive trade practice to improve the welfare of workers everywhere."

The US Trade Representative's office has also determined 10% as the rate of duties based on Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 for the investigated economies that have imposed, partially imposed, or have committed to impose measures to prohibit the import of certain goods made using forced labour. India, Canada, and the UK are among the countries that fall in this category. The office determined 10-12.5% rate of duties for certain products from the European Union, Japan, and Switzerland, among other countries. All other economies investigated will face 12.5% rate of duty.  End
