MUMBAI – Water storage in 166 key reservoirs across the country was at 70.43 billion cubic meters as of Thursday, down over 36% from 110.52 bcm a year ago, according to data from the Central Water Commission. The current storage accounted for 38.4% of the total live storage capacity and was nearly 7?low the average storage over the past 10 years, the data showed. 

 

The lower storage level comes amid a delayed onset of the monsoon and subpar rainfall so far, particularly in June. Although daily rainfall has improved in the past few days, the cumulative monsoon rainfall from Jun. 1-Jul. 23 was 17?low the normal at 306.9 mm, India Meteorological Department data showed.

 

All regions had significantly lower water levels than last year, with South India marking the biggest decline from last year's storage.

 

The water level in the southern region was 16.73 bcm, or 30.3% of the total live storage capacity of the 47 reservoirs, according to the data. The region includes Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. At this time last year, the water level was 69.4% of the total live storage capacity. 

 

In the northern region, the water level was 7.06 bcm or 35.6% of total live storage capacity. This was down from the 50.2% total live storage capacity recorded the year before. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

 

Reservoirs in the eastern region held 8.25 bcm or 37.9% of total live storage capacity. At this time last year, the 27 reservoirs held 47.7% of the total live storage capacity. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.

 

In the central region, which consists of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, the 28 reservoirs in the region held 19.0 bcm or 39.1% of total live storage capacity. A year ago, the reservoirs were at 58.4% of total live storage capacity. 

 

Reservoirs in the western region, which includes Goa, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, held 19.4 bcm or 50.9% of the total live storage capacity. Last year, the 53 reservoirs in the region held 61.5% of total live storage capacity.  End
