India rainfall 44% above normal on Thursday, season's deficit at 17%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 13.6 millimetres of rainfall on Thursday, 44?ove the normal of 9.4 mm, according to the data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Jul. 23, the country received 306.9 mm of rain, 17?low the normal of 370.9 mm for the period.

 

Of the four homogeneous regions of the country, two regions – east and northeast India and south India – registered "deficient" rains on Thursday, while central India and north west India received "large excess" rains.

 

The east and northeast received 28?low-normal rains at 9.6 mm of rainfall on Thursday, while central India recorded 21 mm of rainfall, 87% above the normal. South India registered 43% below-normal rains at 4.2 mm, and northwest India recorded 13.5 mm of rainfall, 99?ove the normal. 

 

On Thursday, the Gujarat region received the highest rainfall at 67.4 mm, followed by Konkan and Goa at 62.2 mm, according to IMD data. IMD had issued a red alert for both the regions amid forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall on Thursday. 

 

Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large excess" in seven, "excess" in seven, "large deficient" in seven, "deficient" in nine, and "normal" in five, according to the data. There was no rainfall in one subdivision. End
