MUMBAI – Amid forecasts of 'extremely heavy' rainfall, the India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for central Maharashtra, Gujarat region, and southeast Rajasthan till Friday. District-wise, the warning is issued for central Maharashtra's Thane, Palghar, and Nashik only on Thursday, but for Pune till Friday. Mumbai city and its suburbs are expected to receive 'very heavy' rains on Thursday, which is seen subsiding to 'heavy' rainfall on Friday. 

In Gujarat, a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall has been issued for Bharuch and Panchmahal on Thursday, and for Dahod and Mahisagar till Friday. Many southern districts of Rajasthan, including Banswara, Dungarpur, Udaipur, Sirohi, and Chittorgarh, are expected to record extremely heavy rains on Thursday, while districts adjoining Gujarat such as Banswara and Dungarpur are likely to see extremely heavy showers continuing till Friday. 

A red alert is issued for extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

In northwest India, IMD has forecast 'very heavy' rainfall over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand from next week, particularly from Monday to Wednesday. While east Rajasthan is expected to have 'extremely heavy' rains till Friday, parts of Uttar Pradesh are seen receiving 'heavy' rainfall next week till Wednesday. 

In central India, IMD expects 'very heavy' rainfall over Vidarbha and West Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, which is seen subsiding to 'heavy' rainfall until Saturday. In northeast India, 'very heavy' rainfall is forecast over Assam and Meghalaya on Thursday. 

IMD has forecast monsoon rains to remain active over northwest and central India during the next three-four days. Similar active rains are also expected over north, east and northeast India in the same period. In contrast, south India is expected to continue seeing subdued rainfall activity during the next seven days.  End
