MUMBAI – PVR INOX Ltd. swung into profit in the June quarter due to a strong rise in revenue and a benign increase in total expenses. Its net profit surpassed the Street view comfortably, while its revenue was largely in line with analysts' projections.
The film exhibition company reported a consolidated net profit of INR 565 million, compared with a loss of INR 540 million in the year-ago quarter. Its bottom line for the quarter rose more than analysts' expectations of INR 398.86 million. However, the company's net profit was down nearly 70% sequentially.
The multiplex operator's consolidated revenue for the quarter rose 11.9% on year to INR 16.22 billion, largely in line with Street's expectations. Its top line also rose sequentially, recording nearly 5% quarter-on-quarter growth.
Movie exhibition costs rose over 23% on year to INR 3.46 billion, while other expenses rose nearly 7.0% from the year-ago quarter to INR 4.08 billion. Depreciation and amortisation expense was up over 2% on year at INR 3.15 billion. Movie production and distribution, and finance costs fell on year, supporting bottom-line growth. Total expenses were up just about 2% on year to INR 15.73 billion.
The company's operating performance also improved, with the company's consolidated earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation rising over 27% to INR 5.55 billion on year. PVR INOX turned net cash positive in the June quarter, holding INR 807 million in cash as of Jun. 30, which gives it the flexibility to pursue a capital-light growth stategy funded through internal accruals, the company said in a press release. PVR INOX is on track to open 90–100 new screens in FY27. Currently, it operates 1,779 screens as of Jun. 30.
The company's sales rose on the back of an operating improvement in all its income sources. Ticket sales rose 16% year-on-year and average ticket price during the quarter increased to INR 273, up 8% from the year-ago quarter. Average food and beverage spending per head was INR 161, up 9% on year, the company said. Customer footfall in its cinemas rose 8% on year to 36.6 million.
A 20% year-on-year increase in the total box office collections of Indian films for the June quarter across markets and across films of different scale and languages helped the cinema industry to grow, the company said. Bhoot Bangla, Cocktail 2, and Main Wapas Aunga helped maintain steady traction in Hindi films, while regional and Hollywood films outperformed, the cinema operator said. Screening of Hollywood non-franchise titles such as Project Hail Mary, Michael, and Obsession were successful. Regional cinema delivered multifold growth on the back of strong local content such as Raja Shivaji in Marathi, Drishyam 3 in Malayalam, and Karuppu in Tamil Nadu, among other films, the company said.
"The content pipeline for the remainder of FY27 remains highly encouraging, with a strong mix of franchise films, star-led tentpoles and content-driven titles across languages," PVR INOX said.
