MUMBAI – The benchmark equity indices fell for the second day Tuesday despite positive cues from other Asian markets as the renewed conflict between the US and Iran in the Persian Gulf region continued for the tenth day and crude oil prices remained high. The indices closed marginally lower on the day of expiry of the Nifty 50's weekly derivatives contract after remaining in a range for most of the session. Most Asian indices ended higher, with Taiwan's TAIEX rising almost 4%. The Nifty 50, however, still remains above 24000 points on expectations of better corporate earnings for the June quarter, analysts said.
The US completed yet another round of strikes against Iran Monday evening as Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis threatened to impose a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, potentially opening a new front in the West Asia conflict, according to a CNBC report. "US forces struck Iranian military command centers, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and air defense systems to degrade Iran's ability to continue attacking commercial vessels flowing through the Strait of Hormuz," CNBC reported, quoting US Central Command.
Though the September futures contract of Brent Crude rose only marginally from its previous close, it remaining close to $90 a barrel dented investor sentiment. At 1514 IST, the futures contract was up 0.1% at $89.34 a barrel. This is nearly 23% higher than the pre-war levels.
Tuesday, the 50-stock index ended 0.2% lower at 24187.70, down 50.80 points from Monday. The BSE Sensex settled 0.3% lower at 77470.11, down 238.41 points. The Nifty 50 closed above 24000 points for the eighth straight session. The index is down almost 4% from its pre-war level of over 25000 points. However, India VIX, the market's fear gauge, suggested that investor nervousness is easing, settling 3% lower at 12.6000 points.
The broader market indices outperformed their benchmark peers for the second day. All indices tied to the broader market settled 0.3–0.5% higher. "Despite geopolitical challenges, midcaps are performing well in anticipation of strong corporate earnings, supported by demand-led business updates," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note. Indices tracking sectors showed a mixed performance, with the Nifty PSU Bank falling the most and the Nifty Realty rising the most.
Banking stocks were the top drags on the Nifty 50 index, with index heavyweight HDFC Bank being the biggest. The banking major was down over 2% and fell for the second day after it detailed its June quarter results Saturday. State Bank of India was also down nearly 2%. Heavyweight peer Reliance Industries fell nearly 2% to be the second-biggest drag on the 50-stock index.
Select information technology and healthcare stocks in the Nifty 50 declined during the session. Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Wipro, and Tech Mahindra were largely flat to down over 1%. The Nifty IT index was down 0.6%. Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Cipla, and Max Healthcare Institute were down 0.2-1.4%.
Premier Energies, One 97 Communications, Waaree Energies, and Dixon Technologies (India) were the top losers in the Nifty 200 index, down over 3?ch. Despite reporting a strong set of numbers for the June quarter, shares of One 97 Communications fell after the company said it had decided to defer the bonus issue of shares. The company's board said the decision was driven by its focus on profitability to enhance value for its shareholders.
Transformers and Rectifiers (India) ended as one of the major losers in the Nifty 500 index, down 5%. Shares of the company fell after its consolidated net profit for the quarter declined 9% on year and about 31% on quarter.
Among the 50-stock index members, Shriram Finance ended as the top gainer, up 2.5%. Shares of Bajaj Finserv were up over 2%. Select automobile stocks such as Eicher Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Maruti Suzuki India also rose 0.6-1.7%. The Nifty Auto ended as the second best performer among sectoral indices, up almost 1%.
Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services and TVS Motor Co. were the top performers in the Nifty 200 index. Shares of M&M Financial Services rose after the company Tuesday reported its strongest year-on-year net profit growth in 17 quarters for Apr-Jun, driven by a rise in total income. Its bottom line, which rose nearly 70% on year, surpassed the Street's estimate.
TVS Motor Co. also rose after posting its June quarter earnings. The company reported a record high revenue and net profit for the June quarter on the back of record high wholesale sales.
Karur Vysya Bank, up over 13%, ended as the best performer among Nifty 500 stocks. Shares of the company rose after the bank said it expects its net interest margin to be near 4% in the September quarter. Gujarat Fluorochemicals and Gabriel India were the other gainers in the index, up over 6?ch.
Canara HSBC Life Insurance Co. was up over 3% after the company's net profit for the June quarter rose over 20% on year. The stock was up for the second session. Shares of SBI Funds Management, which made their debut on the bourses Tuesday, ended over 6% higher. Alpine Texworld, which was also listed on the bourses Tuesday, settled 5% lower.
