NHPC reports 10 casualties in explosion at Teesta Stage VI Sikkim Project

NEW DELHI – State-run NHPC Ltd. Tuesday said 10 casualties have been reported after a suspected methane gas burst triggered an explosion inside the under-construction Head Race Tunnel of its 500-megawatt Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project in Sikkim.
"As per the latest information from site, 25 personnel were trapped inside the tunnel, out of which 10 casualties have been reported so far," the company said in its exchange filing.
The incident occurred at 0104 IST on Monday at the project site in Samardung, South Sikkim, after a sudden burst of suspected methane gas trapped inside rocks caused an explosion, generating dense fumes and toxic gases. The company said it had immediately activated emergency response protocols and was carrying out rescue operations in coordination with the district administration, the National Disaster Response Force, the State Disaster Response Force, local authorities, and other emergency agencies. A special rescue team from the Directorate General of Mines Safety has also reached the site, acccording to an exchange filing.
NHPC said a detailed investigation would be undertaken to ascertain the cause of the incident and that it is extending full support to the rescue agencies and the families affected.
NHPC had reported a net profit of INR 13.28 billion for the March quarter on revenue of INR 27.41 billion. At 1406 IST, shares of the company traded 0.3% lower at INR 80.75 on the National Stock Exchange. End
