PM must apologise, stop student thrashing over paper leak stir

NEW DELHI – Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi Tuesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should apologise to the students protesting over exam paper leak, and stop "this nonsense of thrashing students". His remarks came after severe police crackdown on protesting youth at Jantar Mantar on Monday, in which hundreds of people were reportedly injured.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Gandhi said that the Opposition sought a discussion on students' issues, and met Speaker Om Birla regarding the same. "But the Speaker said that he will have to consult the government on this. You see, the Speaker is openly telling us that he will need the government's permission for a debate in the House," Rahul Gandhi said.
He said that the matter pertains to future of youths, and the way it is being handled and people are being beaten up are "completely un-Indian".
"Modi ji has not even apologised for what happened yesterday (Monday). The youth are protesting against the education and testing system. The whole country knows that the education and testing system is broken, it has ceased to exist," he said.
"Testing system has been hollowed out by termites. That is all they are saying, nothing wrong with it. We have been saying this too. Why is the prime minister silent?" the senior Indian National Congress leader asked. He added that the prime minister should apologise to the students and "stop this nonsense of thrashing students".
Earlier, both Houses of Parliament were adjourned till 1400 IST amid Opposition uproar and sloganeering over police lathicharge on protesting students at Jantar Mantar, and various other issues. End
