MUMBAI – India's rainfall improved on Monday, taking the average daily rainfall to above normal amid a revival of monsoon over some northern parts of the country. On Monday, the country received 7% above-normal rainfall at 10.2 millimetres against the normal of 9.6 mm, the India Meteorological Department data showed. However, seasonal rainfall, recorded from Jun. 1-Jul. 20, remained 23% below normal at 263.2 mm against the normal of 342.1 mm, IMD data showed. 

For over a week, India has been logging below-normal daily rainfall amid a lack of active weather systems. This was a stark difference from the first week of July, when the country recorded above-normal rainfall consecutively from Jul. 1 to Jul. 9. 

Of the four homogeneous regions in the country, two regions – east and north-east India, and north-west India – received 'excess' rainfall on Monday. Meanwhile, central India recorded 'deficient' rains and south India received 'normal' rains.  

The east and north-east region received 19.8 mm of rainfall, 30% above normal. North-west India recorded 10.3 mm of rainfall, 38% above normal. However, four subdivisions within the northwest India region recorded 'large deficient' rains while four recorded 'large excess' rains on Monday. 

The weather department had issued a red alert as it expected 'extremely heavy' rains over some pockets in many subdivisions in northwest India; Punjab received 85% below-normal rains, Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh recorded 86% below-normal rainfall, and Himachal Pradesh recorded 63% below-normal rain, IMD data showed. Meanwhile, west Rajasthan received no rainfall, against the normal of 3.1 mm.

Meanwhile, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh recorded 130% above-normal rain, Uttarakhand recorded 146% above-normal rainfall, east Uttar Pradesh received 93% above-normal and west Uttar Pradesh logged 77% above-normal showers, IMD data showed. 

Central India recorded 28% below-normal rainfall, receiving 7.6 mm of rainfall against the normal of 10.5 mm. The south peninsula region recorded 1% above-normal rainfall at 6.9 mm.

Of the 36 subdivisions, 11 recorded 'large deficient' rainfall, while four recorded 'deficient' levels of rainfall and one recorded no rainfall. Eight subdivisions recorded 'normal' levels of rainfall, while three recorded an 'excess' and nine recorded a 'large excess' of rainfall. End
