--Fin min: No proposal under consideration presently to privatise PSU banks
NEW DELHI – The government is currently not considering any proposal to privatise public sector banks, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said Monday in a written response to a question in the Lok Sabha. This comes at a time when reports suggest that the government is in advanced stage of selling its stake along with that of Life Insurance Corp. of India in IDBI Bank.
In the Budget for 2021-22 (Apr-Mar), Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced plans to privatise two public sector banks, apart from IDBI Bank. However, the inordinate delay faced in the strategic disinvestment of IDBI Bank seems to have forced the government to reconsider the proposal to privatise other public sector banks. End
