India receives 7% below normal rains Sun, season's deficit at 24%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 8.8 millimetres of rainfall on Sunday, 7% below the normal of 9.4 millimetres, data from the India Meteorological Department showed. During Jun. 1-Jul. 19, the country received 253.2 millimetres of precipitation, 24% below normal for the period.
Of the four homogenous regions in the country, rainfall was above normal in two and below normal in the other two, according to the data. Rainfall in east and northeast India was 4% above normal at 15.1 millimetres, while in northwest India, it was 13% above normal at 8.1 millimetres. Though most subdivisions in both regions remained relatively dry, intense showers in specifically a few subdivisions pushed the overall average higher. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh all recorded either "large excess" or "excess" showers due to the presence of multiple weather systems. The remnants of a low pressure area, along with several upper air cyclonic circulations, kept up the spell of rainfall over these regions.
Rainfall in central India was 23% below normal at 8.2 millimetres, and in south peninsular India, it was 13% below normal at 5.5 millimetres. The absence of weather systems has kept rainfall deficient over these regions.
In the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "deficient" in nine, "normal" in nine, "large deficient" in seven, "large excess" in five, and "excess" in four, the data showed. Two subdivisions did not record any rainfall on Sunday. End
