MUMBAI – The June-quarter earnings of fast-moving consumer goods companies are expected to improve on slightly better growth in volumes and analysts are maintaining positive views on these companies. However, on the technical front, shares of FMCG companies continue to remain in a range, unable to make a decisive move on either side. Analysts believe a substantial rise in domestic sales volumes may help stocks of FMCG companies gain some momentum in the medium term.

FMCG companies that are focusing more on rural areas are likely to see some pain in the June quarter, an analyst at a domestic brokerage said. "If the monsoon is going to be distributed in a better way, I think FMCG demand will hold up," the analyst said. So far, since the start of the monsoon, the country has received 231.3 mm of precipitation, 24?low the normal of 304.2 mm.

On the other hand, the APEC Climate Center's probabilistic El Nino-Southern Oscillation projects a strong El Nino event that is likely to persist from August to January, with chances of the event at 99.8% during Aug-Oct. It sees an "enhanced" probability of below-normal rainfall over India from August to October while a "tendency" for above-normal precipitation is likely in Nov-Jan. Most organisations have indicated that the El Nino event could peak at a level that is the highest in years.

The quarterly business updates of Marico, Dabur, Godrej Consumer Products, and Jubilant FoodWorks show stable demand with sequential recovery in volumes and pricing-led growth. The growth is expected to be aided by price hikes while margins are likely to be under pressure.

In the near term, the stocks of FMCG companies are expected to react to their June quarter earnings. Next week, FMCG giant Nestle India and alcoholic beverages maker United Spirits are slated to declare their earnings. Both stocks posted losses for two straight weeks.

For the reporting quarter, Nestle India's net profit is likely to rise almost 24% on year to INR 8.15 billion and its revenue is expected to increase 18% on year to INR 60.18 billion, according to the average of estimates from 13 brokerages. United Spirits is expected to report a net profit of INR 3.25 billion, up 21% on year on a revenue of INR 26.94 billion, up nearly 6% on year, according to the average of estimates from nine brokerages.

The sectoral index ended Friday at 48748.70 points, up 340.70 points or 0.7%. Barring Patanjali Foods and alcohol-making companies, all its constituents ended the day higher. Over the week, the Nifty FMCG fell 1.1%, against a 0.5% rise in the benchmark Nifty 50 index. The Nifty FMCG index closed lower for the second week, while the Nifty 50 posted gains over the week.
