India rainfall 30% below normal Friday, season's deficit at 24%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 6.8 millimetres of rainfall on Friday, 30?low the normal of 9.7 mm, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1-Jul. 17, the country received 238.0 mm of rainfall, 24?low the normal of 313.9 mm for the period.
Of the four homogeneous regions of the country, three recorded 'deficient' or 'large deficient' precipitation on Friday. In northwest India, rainfall was "large deficient" at 72?low normal at 2.2 mm. In east and northeast India, rainfall was "deficient," at 39?low normal, with a total of 8.2 mm.
The south peninsula, which was reeling under heatwave conditions till Thursday, received 5.4 mm of rainfall, 31?low the normal 7.8 mm. In the region, coastal Karnataka received a "large excess" of rainfall at 112?ove normal. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal regions recorded no rainfall. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema recorded "large deficient" rainfall at 74% and 69?low normal, respectively.
The central India region received 4?ove-normal rainfall, recording 11.1 mm of precipitation against a normal of 10.7 mm. Odisha received a "large excess" of rainfall, recording 35.8 mm against a normal of 11.9 mm, 201?ove normal.
Out of 36 subdivisions, 16 recorded "large deficient" rainfall, 13 recorded "deficient" rainfall, and three recorded "large excess" rainfall. Two subdivisions each recorded "normal" and no rainfall during the day. End
