MUMBAI – Poonawalla Fincorp Ltd. Friday reported better-than-expected earnings for the June quarter on the back of robust revenue growth. The company's net profit for the June quarter increased more than four times, beating Street estimates.

The non-banking finance company reported a consolidated net profit of INR 3.08 billion, compared to INR 626 million for the year-ago quarter. This growth is due to a robust increase in other income, which rose to INR 67 million in the quarter under review from INR 0.4 million in the year-ago quarter. The consensus estimate of analysts for Poonawalla Fincorp's consolidated net profit was INR 3.03 billion.

The company's revenue from operations rose 77% on year to INR 23.3 billion. Poonawalla Fincorp's total expenses rose 56% to INR 19.26 billion.

The non-banking finance company reported assets under management of INR 670.54 billion as of Jun. 30. Poonawalla Fincorp's net interest income was INR 14.15 billion, up nearly 10.9% on quarter.

The company registered a slight increase of 5 basis points on quarter in its net interest margin, taking it to 9.10%. The capital adequacy ratio of the non-bank lender stood at 19.46% as on Jun. 30, well above the regulatory requirement of 15%, providing enough headroom for growth.

Poonawalla Fincorp's gross non-performing asset ratio in the June quarter was 1.37%, down from 1.44% in March quarter. Its net non-performing asset ratio was 0.70%, down 4 basis points from the trailing quarter.

The Mumbai-headquartered company plans to expand operations into Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. It is also considering tapping tier-2 and tier-3 cities to provide gold loans.

The company is confident of posting improved credit cost from here on. Poonawalla Fincorp expects its credit cost to improve from 2.4% over the next few quarters. As of now, the company does not see a need for further fundraising in the current finacial year. However, it will remain watchful of the macroeconomic situation though the company does not see write-offs going up.

Poonawalla Fincorp expects to be able to maintain its net interest margin on a better product mix. The lender said it will be able to maintain the margin despite higher borrowing costs.

The company said 25 new artificial intelligence projects have been added this quarter, bringing the total to 101 cutting-edge AI projects, of which 50 have been successfully implemented.

Friday, the Poonawalla Fincorp stock ended at INR 477.30 on the National Stock Exchange, up 1.1% from Thursday. The company detailed its earnings after market hours.  End
