NEW DELHI – RBL Bank's net profit for the quarter ended June rose sharply on year due to a rise in net interest income. A sequential fall in provisions and improvement in the lender's asset quality also boosted the bottom line.
The private sector bank's net profit rose nearly 27% on year to INR 2.54 billion. Sequentially, the bottom line rose over 10%. The company beat analysts' estimates, which had pegged the net profit at INR 2.33 billion. The net interest income of the lender grew 12% on year to INR 16.54 billion.
The lender released its earning after market hours. On Friday, shares of the company ended over 1% higher at INR 80.35 on the National Stock Exchange.
The private sector bank's total income rose over 6% on year to nearly INR 48 billion in the June quarter. Of this, interest income grew nearly 12% on year and over 3% sequentially to INR 38.40 billion. However, other income fell more than 10% both on year and on quarter to INR 9.59 billion in the reporting quarter.
Meanwhile, the bank's total expenses for the quarter were at INR 38.77 billion, broadly similar to the previous and year-ago quarters. Of the toal expenses, interest expense rose nearly 12% on year to INR 21.89 billion. Sequentially, it rose almost 7%.
The board also approved increasing its borrowing limit to up to INR 400 billion.
RBL Bank's provisions for the quarter rose to INR 5.99 billion from INR 4.42 billion a year ago. The bank's asset quality improved marginally during the quarter. Its gross non-performing asset ratio declined to 1.30% as of Jun. 30 from 1.45% a quarter earlier, while the net non-performing asset ratio eased to 0.37% from 0.39%.
The Basel-III capital adequacy ratio stood at 33.3% as of Jun. 30, compared with 14.2% as of Mar. 31. The lender also plans to raise up to INR 100 billion through debt on a private placement basis.
The net interest income for the June quarter rose 12% on year to INR 16.54 billion and increased 4.1% from the previous quarter.
RBL Bank's retail advances as of Jun. 30 were at INR 641. 96 billion, up 13% on year, while wholesale advances were at INR 520.27 billion for the same period, up 38% on year.
The lender's average liquidity coverage ratio was 133% and its provision coverage ratio, including technical write off, was at 94.94% on Jun 30. The bank's cost of deposits for the reporting quarter was 6.09%, compared to 5.92% a quarter ago. The yield on advances was at 11.2%, compared to 11.6% a quarter ago. End
