NEW DELHI – The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade will now track production data of nine core industries, instead of eight, as part of the new index of core industries. The department will add iron ore as a new core sector to the existing list of eight core industries. The new series will have 2022-23 (Apr-Mar) as the new base year instead of FY12, the commerce and industry ministry said Friday.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is scheduled to release the provisional Index of Core Industries series for June, with FY23 as the base year, on Jul. 20. The department will also roll out back-series data for the index from April 2023 to May 2026, the ministry said in a press release. The revision of the Index of Core Industries series will follow the revisions to the base years of IIP, CPI, WPI, and GDP.
In terms of methodology, the new series for the core industries index will align with the Index of Industrial Production, which tracks short-term changes in industrial output. "As per the established methodology, the weights for the ICI (Index of Core Industries) series have been derived from the weights of the Index of Industrial Production 2022–23 series released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation," the ministry said. "The weights of the ICI basket items, drawn from the IIP, have been redistributed on a pro rata basis to total 100 for finalising the weights of the ICI item basket."
The new core industries series will use gross production data for compiling the steel index, replacing the net production data used in the existing series. This will ensure consistency with the IIP, the ministry said.
Apart from the addition of the iron ore sector, the new series will retain the raw coal segment in the coal sector and remove coal middlings and washed coal segments. This will help eliminate double-counting as both are derived from raw coal, the ministry said. With this, the upcoming core industries index will track industrial production of raw coal, crude oil, natural gas, petroleum refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement, electricity, and iron ore.
