NEW DELHI – India's foreign exchange reserves rose to a five-week high of $675.16 billion as on Jul. 10, data released by the Reserve Bank of India Friday showed. The reserves rose by $964 million on week, mainly due to a rise in foreign currency assets.

The rupee depreciated 0.1% against the dollar in the week ended Jul. 10 due to persistent dollar purchases by importers, as per dealers. Foreign currency assets rose $930 million on week to $546.51 billion as of Jul. 10. The value of the central bank's gold holdings rose $24 million on week to $105.23 billion as of Jul. 10.

This is the second consecutive time foreign exchange reserves have risen on a weekly basis. The reserves are likely to rise with higher inflows of the foreign currency after the central bank, on Jun. 8, announced measures to bear the full hedging costs of banks raising fresh three- to five-year FCNR(B) deposits by Sept. 30.

Calculated in dollar terms, the RBI's foreign exchange reserves also reflect the impact of the appreciation or depreciation of currencies other than the dollar, such as the euro, the pound sterling, and the yen held by the central bank.  End
