MUMBAI – Rainfall activity is expected to remain subdued over parts of west, central, and south peninsular India in the next seven days due to the absence of any active weather systems over these regions, the India Meteorological Department said. On the other hand, the presence of multiple weather systems over east and northeast India is expected to keep up the intensity of showers over these regions. Northwest India is likely to witness weak to moderate rainfall in the next three days, after which the intensity is expected to pick up, the weather department said.

 

The well-marked low pressure area over north Odisha and adjoining Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal weakened into a low pressure area over the same region in the early hours of Friday, and is likely to weaken further in the next 24 hours, the department said. Under its influence, Chattisgarh is expected to receive very heavy showers till Saturday, and heavy rainfall from Sunday to Tuesday. Heavy showers are also expected over east Madhya Pradesh till Tuesday. Light to moderate showers with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over the rest of central India till Thursday.

 

Light to moderate showers are likely over most parts of west India till Thursday, while thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are seen over parts of central Maharashtra and Marathwada till Sunday, the weather bureau said.

 

Strong surface winds are expected over parts of Karnataka and Telangana till Thursday and over Andhra Pradesh till Tuesday. Thundersqualls are also likely over Telangana till Saturday. Heavy showers are expected over parts of Kerala and Karnataka till Sunday, the weather bureau said. A wet spell with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected over several parts of south peninsular India till Thursday, the bureau said. 

 

The presence of the low pressure area, along two upper air cyclonic circulations and a trough running from Lakshadweep to the Bay of Bengal, is likely to cause very heavy rainfall over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Monday, over Bihar on Sunday and Monday, over Arunachal Pradesh till Saturday, and over Assam and Meghalaya till Sunday, the weather department said. Heavy to very heavy rainfall with spells of extremely heavy showers over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are likely during the weekend, for which the department has issued a red alert. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

 

Heavy showers with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winda are expected to persist over several parts of east and northeast India till Thursday, the weather bureau said. 

 

A fresh western disturbance acting as a cyclonic circulation lies over north Pakistan, the weather department said. Under its influence, very heavy showers are likely over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and west Uttar Pradesh from Monday to Wednesday, over Himachal Pradesh from Sunday to Wednesday, over Uttarakhand from Saturday to Tuesday, and east Uttar Pradesh from Sunday to Tuesday. Heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over multiple parts of northwest India till Thursday, the department said.

 

Hot and humid weather conditions are likely in pockets of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab till Saturday, the department said.  End
