MUMBAI – Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. reported its first June-quarter net profit in seven years on Thursday, driven by higher revenue from operations. The state-owned company posted a net profit of INR 3.82 billion for the June quarter, compared with a net loss of INR 4.55 billion a year ago. However, net profit declined sharply from the previous quarter.
Brokerages had mixed expectations for the company's bottom line amid divergent views on its operating leverage. While three broking firms expected BHEL to return to profit, two expected it to continue reporting losses for the quarter, albeit narrower than from a year ago.
Nevertheless, the company exceeded even the highest analyst estimate for net profit. Nuvama Wealth Management Ltd. had expected BHEL to report a net profit of INR 3.70 billion, compared with the reported net profit of INR 3.81 billion for the June quarter.
Sequentially, net profit fell by over 70% from INR 12.83 billion in the March quarter. BHEL is a leading manufacturer of power-generation equipment and a major supplier of locomotives, transmission equipment, and defence equipment.
BHEL's revenue rose over 40% on year to INR 76.98 billion for the June quarter, exceeding the Street's estimate of INR 67.01 billion. However, sequentially, it was down more than 37%.
For June quarter, BHEL reported commodities and services costs up over 41% on year at INR 58.4 billion, while employee benefit expenses were 3% higher on year at INR 15.1 billion. While some big-ticket expenses rose in the quarter, finance costs and other expenses declined 23% on year and 42% on year to INR 1.4 billion and INR 3.9 billion, respectively.
The company's total income rose nearly 40% on year to INR 79.29 billion, while total expenses increased 18% on year to INR 74.16 billion in the June quarter.
Thursday, BHEL's shares closed 4.2% higher at INR 435.40 on the National Stock Exchange. The company announced its June quarter results during market hours. End
