MUMBAI – Volatility persisted in the domestic equity market Thursday as the peace deal signed last month between the US and Iran came under strain amid renewed strikes between the two countries and rising crude oil prices. The benchmark indices ended largely flat on the expiry of Sensex weekly options contracts, with the Nifty 50 index barely holding above the 24000 level. Crude oil prices, which climbed to $85 a barrel, rekindled investor nervousness.
In the latest development, Iran's military warned that "all infrastructure in the region will be crushed under steel blows" if the US carried out its threat to strike civilian sites in Iran, Al Jazeera reported. The US military said it launched another wave of strikes on Iran, with explosions reported on Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas and Chabahar. The US military also said it had "disabled" an oil tanker attempting to sail towards an Iranian port in the Strait of Hormuz by firing Hellfire missiles, the report said.
At 1443 IST, the September Brent crude oil futures contract was down almost 1% at $84.17 per barrel. Brent crude remained 15.5?ove its pre-war level. After a volatile session, the Nifty 50 settled at 24072.75, down 5.75 points from the previous close. The BSE Sensex closed at 77186.87, up 1.44 points from the previous close.
However, most broader market indices underperformed the benchmark indices, ending lower for the session. Mid-cap indices closed 0.3–0.4% lower, while the Nifty Small-cap 100 ended down 0.1%. Sectoral indices ended the session on a mixed note, with the Nifty Consumer Durables emerging as the top gainer.
InterGlobe Aviation was the top gainer on the Nifty 50, rising almost 2%. The stock advanced for a second straight session despite Brent crude oil remaining around $85 a barrel. Most information technology stocks also gained, supporting the benchmark indices. Wipro and HCL Technologies rose nearly 2?ch, while Tech Mahindra, Infosys, and Tata Consultancy Services gained 0.5–0.8%. The Nifty IT index was among the top-performing sectoral indices, rising nearly 1%.
Automobile stocks were also among the major gainers in the Nifty 50 index, with the Nifty Auto index ending 0.5% higher. Maruti Suzuki India and Mahindra & Mahindra closed more than 1% higher each, while Eicher Motors and Bajaj Auto ended marginally higher.
Titan Co. and ITC gained around 1?ch. Tata Consumer Products and Asian Paints were up 0.1–0.3%. The Nifty Consumer Durables index was the top-performing sectoral index, gaining 1.5%.
Among the top Nifty 200 gainers, ABB India and Dixon Technologies (India) were the top performers, rising more than 6?ch. Shares of Dixon Technologies rose after the Cabinet Wednesday approved the mobile phone manufacturing scheme with a total outlay of INR 625 billion. ABB India gained after its Swiss parent ABB reported an 8% on-year growth in income from operations to $1.59 billion for the June quarter.
Bharat Heavy Electricals ended more than 4% higher after the company posted a net profit for the June quarter, compared with a net loss a year ago. The stock rose for the sixth time in seven sessions.
Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals and Emmvee Photovoltaic Power were the biggest gainers on the Nifty 500 index, rising 8-10%. Mangalore Refinery's June-quarter revenue doubled on year, while it posted a net profit, compared with a loss a year ago. Emmvee Photovoltaic's Apr-Jun consolidated net profit beat Street estimates by a wide margin.
Banking and financial services stocks were among the biggest drags on the Nifty 50. The Nifty Financial Services and Nifty PSU Bank fell 0.5?ch. SBI Life Insurance Co. fell more than 2%, while a nearly 1?cline in index heavyweight HDFC Bank also capped gains in the Nifty 50. Shriram Finance was down aboout 1%, while Bajaj Finserv shed 0.6%.
ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co. was the biggest drag on both the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices, falling 10.5%. Shares of the company fell after the insurer's June-quarter net profit declined 46% on year and missed Street estimates. Billionbrains Garage Ventures shed 5% on the Nifty 200.
