MUMBAI – The low pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal strengthened into a well-marked low pressure area in the early hours of Thursday, the India Meteorological Department said. A trough runs from a cyclonic circulation associated with this low pressure area from the West Bengal coast to the east-central Arabian Sea. Multiple upper air cyclonic circulations also lie over east and northeast India and the western Himalayan region, and the combined influence of these weather systems is expected to cause enhanced rainfall activity over these regions in the next seven days, the weather department said.

 

Very heavy showers are expected over parts of Bihar, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim from Saturday to Monday, over Odisha on Friday, over Arunachal Pradesh from Friday to Sunday, and over Assam and Meghalaya till Sunday, the department said. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over most parts of east and northeast India till Wednesday, the department said.

 

A western disturbance acting as a cyclonic circulation lies over Jammu and another cyclonic circulation lies over Haryana. A fresh western disturbance is expected to begin affecting northwest India from Sunday, the weather bureau said. Under their influence, very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on Tuesday, over Himachal Pradesh from Sunday to Wednesday, over Uttarakhand from Saturday to Tuesday, and over east Uttar Pradesh from Sunday to Tuesday, the bureau said. Heavy showers with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over several parts of northwest India till Wednesday.

 

Rainfall activity is expected to remain subdued over parts of west, central, and south peninsular India in the next seven days, the weather department said. In central India, heavy showers are expected over Chhattisgarh and east Madhya Pradesh from Friday to Tuesday and over Vidarbha on Friday and Saturday. Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over most parts of central India till Wednesday. Thunderstorms and lightning are likely over parts of central Maharashtra till Friday and over Marathwada till Saturday, while a wet spell is expected to persist over most parts of west India till Wednesday, the department said.

 

Strong surface winds are expected over parts of Karnataka on Sunday and over parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana till Monday, the weather bureau said. Light to moderate showers with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over several parts of south peninsular India till Wednesday, the bureau said.

 

Heatwave conditions are likely over parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry til Friday, the weather department said. Hot and humid weather conditions are expected to persist in pockets of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab till Saturday, over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till Friday, and over Andhra Pradesh on Friday, the department said.  End
