MUMBAI – The government has raised the base import price of most edible oils in the range of $4-$18 per tonne, while it has lowered the base import price of crude soyoil by $22 per tonne, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs said in a notification late on Wednesday. The revised rates came into effect Thursday.
The base import prices of edible oils were last revised on Jul. 1 and took effect the next day. Typically, base import prices of edible oils are revised every fortnight, and these are used to calculate the duty on the commodities brought into the country.
India is the largest importer of edible oils. Palm oil accounts for the bulk of the country's imports, mostly sourced from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The base import price of crude palm oil has been raised by $13 per tonne to $1,203 per tonne, and that of refined, bleached, and deodorised palm oil has been raised by $18 per tonne to $1,215 per tonne. The government has also raised the base import price of both crude palmolein oil and refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein oil by $4 per tonne each to $1,221 per tonne and $1,224 per tonne, respectively. It has cut the price of crude soyoil by $22 per tonne to $1,238 per tonne.
