NEW DELHI – The government on Wednesday said it has opened registrations to set up exchanges for trading of coal and its processed forms. "We are opening a coal and mining sector exchange. This will further enhance transparency and competitiveness in the coal and mining sector," Union Minsiter of Coal and Mines G. Krishna Reddy said at an event in New Delhi.

According to an earlier release, the coal ministry has designated the Coal Controller Organisation as the authority responsible for registering and regulating coal exchanges. Eligible entities will be authorised by the organisation to establish and operate coal exchanges, frame market rules and bye-laws, and facilitate coal trading, according to the release. Registrations will be granted for a period of 25 years, the release said.

The minister said that the government has closed 46 coal mines, and has set a target to close 147 coal mines within a year or two. He noted that the world is facing new geopolitical realities. "Supply chains are under pressure. Critical minerals have become strategic resources, and energy security has emerged as a sharp global reaction," the minister said.

"The mineral sector is rapidly changing the world. No country can build resilient and sustainable mineral supply chains. The future lies in partnerships. Countries with common aspirations must come together to build reliable supply chains," he said.

Coal Secretary Vikram Dev Dutt said, "The opening of this sector (coal) to private players has brought in new investments, advanced mining technologies, operational efficiencies and global best practices into the sector. Commercial mining has now emerged as an important pillar of India's coal production growth stories, contributing about one-fifth of the total annual production.

"The initiatives which have been taken in a synergistic and integrated fashion across the end-to-end ecosystem of the coal mining landscape have substantially enhanced the supply chain efficiency while lowering transportation costs for the industry," he added.

According to him, coal continues to be an indispensable energy source. "Recognising this, the Ministry of Coal is focused not only on increasing production, but on building an integrated ecosystem that supports sustainable mining, efficient logistics, technological innovation and private investment," he said.  End
